Understanding the Circle of Fifths

The circle of fifths is the single most useful diagram in Western music theory. It organizes all 12 major keys (and their relative minor keys) into a circular pattern where adjacent keys share six out of seven notes in common. This close relationship explains why modulating between neighboring keys sounds smooth and natural, while jumping across the circle creates dramatic harmonic contrast.

Moving clockwise from C major: each new key adds one sharp (G→1♯, D→2♯, A→3♯, E→4♯, B→5♯, F♯→6♯, C♯→7♯). Moving counterclockwise: each key adds one flat (F→1♭, B♭→2♭, E♭→3♭, A♭→4♭, D♭→5♭, G♭→6♭, C♭→7♭). What is the circle of fifths used for?

What are the diatonic chords of a key?

Diatonic chords are the 7 chords that naturally occur within a key using only that key's notes.

In C major, they are C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, and Bdim. These chords all sound naturally harmonious when played together.

What does a key signature tell you?

A key signature tells you which notes are consistently sharp or flat throughout a piece.

It appears at the beginning of sheet music after the clef, saving you from writing a sharp or flat before every affected note.

How is the circle of fifths arranged?
