The Violin's Bowed Tone

The violin is one of the most expressive string instruments, producing sustained melodic lines through horsehair bow drawn across synthetic or gut strings. Our virtual version recreates the characteristic sawtooth waveform produced by Helmholtz motion (a stick-slip bow-string interaction) and adds a 6Hz vibrato via detune LFO — the standard classical vibrato frequency approximate to a fine violinist's hand movement.

A standard violin is tuned in perfect fifths: G3 (196 Hz), D4 (293 Hz), A4 (440 Hz), E5 (659 Hz) from lowest to highest string. Our virtual version covers a full chromatic range starting at G3, which region partially includes the open A string and D-string tessitura central to orchestral violin parts.
