Understanding Standard Ukulele Re-Entrant Tuning (gCEA)

Unlike a standard guitar where string pitch ascends linearly from lowest to highest, the ukulele uses a unique configuration known as re-entrant tuning (gCEA):

  • 4th String (G4): Tuned to G above middle C. Notice that this top string is pitched higher than the 3rd string!
  • 3rd String (C4): Tuned to middle C (261.63 Hz). This is the lowest-pitched string on the instrument.
  • 2nd String (E4): Tuned to E above middle C (329.63 Hz).
  • 1st String (A4): Tuned to A4 (440.00 Hz), providing the bright lead note for melodies and chord voicings.

Essential Beginner Ukulele Chords

Thanks to the 4-string layout and compact fretboard, beginners can play hundreds of popular songs with just four simple chord shapes:

  • C Major (0-0-0-3): Place your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the 1st string. All other strings ring open.
  • A Minor (2-0-0-0): Place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string.
  • F Major (2-0-1-0): Keep your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the 4th string and add your index finger to the 1st fret of the 2nd string.
